The weirdest thing happened today when I tried to hard boil some eggs.
I usually do the recipe where you bring eggs in cold water with a splash of vinegar (to help make peeling easier) to a boil, then cover it and turn it off and check it in 16 minutes. Today I did that, and set the timer, and forgot it. When I finally remembered, fearing overcooked eggs, I rushed over to the sink and poured the eggs and hot water into a strainer. But instead of overcooked eggs, I had basically just partially cracked several UNcooked eggs.
I have absolutely no way to make sense of this.
The story has a happy ending, at least. I used the partially cooked eggs to make a sort of “scrambled egg soup” by blending it up, throwing in a half gallon of chicken bone broth and a cup of rice.
The kids seem to be enjoying it. But this incident will live on as a household mystery. Unless you have any ideas?
I have no idea why the eggs wouldn’t cook, but how do you overcook an hardboiled egg?
Well, if they’re perfectly cooked, the yolk will have some moisture to it and be perfectly yellow/orange. If it’s overcooked it starts turning green or blue-green at the edges and is very dry and chalky.
I’m baffled myself, I’ve never heard of such. I always forget about the vinegar when I boil some eggs for our 4 year old. I start with eggs just covered in cold water, bring to a boil, then time it to 10 minutes.
Bizarre, but good for you for finding a way to salvage them!
