Sarah,
I don’t think I sufficiently thanked you for dinner and a very nice evening Friday night. Don’t think that our lack of silence was not a testament to your cooking. On the contary, it was a penance to not be able to indulge some moments in the wonderful food. Nevertheless, it was a penance I was willing to endure, in order to discussion matters theological with Dave & al.
Don’t think that our lack of silence was not a testament to your cooking.
This was poorly worded. I mean that our lack of silence was not meant to imply that the food was not good enough to stop talking and to eat immediately.
Of course, in the next sentence I also split the infinitive with a not !
Ah yes, meat. I actually had my first “real” steak since before Lent last night. It was wonderful (though, actually, I don’t think I am attached to meat as much as I used to be–of course, that is the goal of abstinence, after all, at least secondarily).
